First Hawaiian Center (FHC) art gallery will be featuring the artworks and ceramics of local master artist Yvonne Cheng from December 5, 2022 to April 14, 2023.
Cheng celebrates the pattern work of tapa through the use of her native batik processes, which is a natural progression toward painting on canvas, pastels, collage, and ink drawings. Her work is represented in numerous private and public collections worldwide and major works are on public display across the state. The First Hawaiian Center exhibition will feature Cheng’s most recent acrylic paintings including a rare triptych and ink drawings. Cheng’s large-scale paintings commissioned for First Hawaiian Bank’s Bishop Street opening in 1996 will also be shown to the public for the first time. In addition, Cheng’s special ceramic collaboration with artist Janet Kelly will be included in this installation.
First Hawaiian Center art gallery reopened in March 2022 to support local artists while making their work more accessible to the people of Hawaii. The premier installation for the reopening featured iconic Hawaii sculptor and painter Satoru Abe. There will be a total of seven installations running through spring 2024.
The art gallery is free to the public and is open during banking hours from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday.
The installations are curated by Eclectix Design Inc. in partnership with First Hawaiian Bank. All pieces displayed in the gallery, with the exception of artwork pulled from First Hawaiian Bank’s private collection, will be available for purchase.
